The Reason Why . . .
. . . I got into sports photography.
. . . to suit my budget at that time, I gave up an ultra-wide lens in favor of a long telephoto.
I saw Maria Sharapova play here in Qatar 3 years ago. That was in 2005. She was still fresh from her Wimbledon conquest and having her play at the 2004 Qatar Total Open was highly appreciated by tennis fans here in Qatar. She did not disappoint and went on to win the title. Back then, I was sitting at the top of the bleachers only with a puny Canon Powershot S30 with 3X zoom. Naturally, I was disappointed with my shots. And so, the purchase of a sports-capable DSLR with a long telephoto lens became a priority so that when she returns to defend her title next year, I'll be able to take better pictures of her. And then she did not played here the following year and the year after that.
I almost cried (drama lang - hehehe) when I heard the news that she's playing here again this year. This time I got my long lens ready and I was seated at court side - she was within arms reach. I've heard once that "beautiful women is the main reason why so many men are drawn to the art and craft of photography." I guess Maria Sharapova drew me back in this time.
Finally, my EOS 20D and telephoto lens have served their true purpose.
Cheers,
